Validate the authenticity and integrity of electronic documents with digital signatures

Imagine that your company has issued a press release containing your latest financial results and distributes it to the media as a digital document. What would happen if the release was intercepted and altered or replaced with a version containing inaccurate information? If this false information were reported by the media, your company could face serious consequences. This example illustrates the importance of being able to validate that a document came from the person it was supposed to have come from and that the contents have not been altered since it was created. That capability is delivered through digital signatures.

In addition, digital signatures can be used as part of a round-trip workflow to enable the recipient of an electronic form to fill it in and digitally sign it to approve a business transaction. Some governments have implemented or are considering legislation to make digital signatures legally binding.

Digital signatures are created using sophisticated encryption technology and a public key infrastructure (PKI). For more information about how digital signatures work, read the FAQ or visit one of Adobe's digital signature partner Web sites, which can be found through the Adobe® Solutions Network

ipsCA U-Sign PDF

Adobe Acrobat users can now digitally sign Adobe PDF documents to enable legally valid electronic transactions using ANY standard X.509 Certificate

Engineers use Adobe Acrobat and U-Sign PDF to save paper, time and money

ipsCA has developed a digital signature plugin based in certificate technology for Adobe® Acrobat® 5.0 software. The plugin extends Adobe Acrobat digital signature capabilities, making electronic documents legally valid. With this feature, Adobe Acrobat users can now send confidential business documents such as competitive bids or employee forms across an enterprise or over the Internet with an electronic credential that ensures the identity of the sender and the integrity of the document.

Through the integration of the digital signature technology with Adobe Acrobat 5.0, businesses of all sizes will now be able to exchange signed documents in electronic format with the same binding validity as if they were in paper form.

A digital signature is even more secure than a written signature because it verifies that the document is coming from the person whose signature is attached and also ensures that the document has not been altered in transit. The recent Federal E-Signature Bill gives digital signatures the same legal weight as written signatures. The digital signature plugin for Adobe Acrobat 5.0 allows users to easily access their digital certificates, which reside securely in browsers or e-mail software, to digitally sign documents.

Adobe Acrobat, The Standard in Electronic Documents...

More and more institutions, insurers and government agencies users are now demanding that their documents be delivered electronically. For many institutions and government entities, only Portable Document Format (PDF) files created with Adobe Acrobat provide the needed security for delivery over the Internet. As a result, many companies have done away completely with paper delivery and will not accept documents in any format other than a PDF.

Delivering your documents by email as a PDF file saves you (and your clients) time and money. You no longer have to spend time waiting for documents to print, making photocopies or running to the Fedex drop box. Adobe Acrobat makes document delivery instantaneous! Send signed documents any time, day or night, without the hassle of waiting for the next mail pickup.

Not only does Adobe Acrobat make document delivery faster, it also saves money on costly postage and overnight courier fees

Easy-to-Use Integration...

With a few clicks of the mouse your documents are “locked in time” and saved as secure, digital Adobe Acrobat PDF files that look exactly like their paper print-outs when viewed on the screen. Acrobat files can be easily emailed or saved to your hard drive or removable media.

Digital Signature Compliant...

Adobe Acrobat 5.0 is fully compliant with the Federal Digital Signature Act. By law, your digital signature, when applied to a document using Adobe Acrobat 5.0 is as valid as a “wet” signature on a paper document. Plus! Acrobat’s built-in signature validation features allow your clients to verify that the signature they see on the screen (or when they print the PDF that you have sent them) is actually yours.

Features of version 3.0

·    Based in Standard X.509 certificates – Signatures can be created using any standard personal certificate, The plugin is available for Windows platforms, and works on top of CryptoAPI, Microsoft cryptographic libraries present in any windows operating system. Certificates for signature can be present in any container supporte by Windows (file, registry, smartcard and token).

·    Multiple Signatures -A document in Acrobat can be signed more than once and by more than one person. Each signature is associated with a version of the document that represents the state of the document when that person signed it .The first time a document is signed, it is saved in an append-only form of PDF that can be appended but not altered. Every time the document is signed after that, the new signature and any changes made since the preceding version are appended to the file. When you view a document with more than one signature, you're viewing the most recent version, but you can open an earlier version in a separate file and compare the two versions to see changes between them.

·    Signature Fields - When an Acrobat document is signed the signature and the related information is stored in a signature field embedded on a page. A signature field is a type of Acrobat form field. You can add a signature field to a page as you sign, or you can use the form tool to create an empty signature field that can be signed later. When you create a field with the form tool, you can have Acrobat execute a script or lock all fields in the document when it is signed. A signature field has properties such as duplication of fields (duplication allows you replicate the signature field in multiple places on the same document allowing you to sign in multiple places with one signature) and bind/invisible signatures (the signature may be masked on the document and will appear only in the signature palette).

·    Stamp Tool - Lets you add permanent text or images to any PDF document, as an Annotation Stamp, compatible with digital signatures present in the document, by just choosing a menu item within Acrobat: No need to launch a separate application. Text and Images may be added in any position: Diagonally across a document as watermarks or as headers and footers. Information you stamp into the PDF document becomes part of the document and is present when it is displayed and printed.

·    Compatibility – U-Sign PDF is compatible with Adobe Acrobat (full sign, stamp and check validity of signature), Approval  (full sign, stamp and check validity of signature), Reader (only check validity of signature) and Reader Extensions (full sign, stamp and check validity of signature).

·    Scanned signature Support – Dynamic Handwritten signature will enable the handwritten signature to be included together with x.509 signature as an “electronic” image of the signature in any Acrobat PDF. The scanned signature can be captured using a digitizer pen and tablet, or can be present in a protected container in a smart card (available for ActivCard Gold Users).

·    International Language support – Support other languages apart from Spanish (English, etc.)

·    OEM capabilities – This version has the capability to be customized for OEM distribution (logos, menus, text, etc.)

·    Standard TimesTamping supported –  The plugin is compatible with Standard RFC TimesTamping Servers, so even if you dont sign your pdf files, you can timestamp them with this technology and you can make sure  A digital time stamp gives you unequivocal proof that the contents of your work existed at a point-in-time and that the contents have not changed since that time. Consider this a type of notary service - only updated to become a digital notary. Any file on your computer can be time stamped, regardless of its content. With TimeStamping  you can use your computer to unequivocally prove that a given file had this content at this point-in-time. Many corporations have been using a digital time stamp on documents for intellectual property protection. That technique was expensive and difficult to use. With TimeStamp and the help of the Internet, you also have this protection. The new technique is less expensive and more secure. Most electronic forms, e-mail, and other electronic transactions require a trustworthy statement of time, otherwise known as a timestamp. Timestamp Server deliver trustworthy, auditable statements of time accompanied with digital signatures   and encryption services. These enhanced security services make it possible to verify that an order or transaction took place at a specified time, and confirms the identity of the user who initiated the transaction. The recorded information provided by the timestamp function would add credibility to these transactions, so that the business process can continue without disruption, or doubt.

·    CRL, OCSP or VA validation supported
